The middle school Family and Consumer Sciences program, in cooperation with the HCPSS Food and Nutrition Services, will introduce the Whole Grain Heroes campaign for the month of November.  Whole Grain Heroes will encourage our students to incorporate whole grain foods at lunchtime through a recognition and incentive campaign on Monday, November 10th.

On November 10th, the FACS teacher, Mrs. Nunn, will visit the cafeteria during all lunch shifts to identify students eating whole grain items from their lunch.  All students identified will receive a “Be a Whole Grains Hero” sticker and will be entered into the drawing for the Whole Grains Hero t-shirt.  T-shirt winners will have their names displayed on a Whole Grains Hero poster and will be recognized at school.  They will also be able to wear their t-shirts the following day for TVMS Superhero Day!

Both students buying lunch at school and students bringing lunch from home are eligible to participate and win.  Students must be able to explain to the “judge”, Mrs. Nunn, what whole grain item they are eating and what whole grains the item contains.  Students enrolled in FACS will have learned about whole grains including how to identify whole grain products and ways to incorporate whole grains in snacks and meals.  For more information about finding whole grains and some wonderful recipes and suggestions for preparing whole grains, families can visit:

When shopping for breads, cereals, and snack items for lunches, be sure to look for the whole grain stamps which designates whole grain food items.

Information about whole grains served as part of the school lunch program can be found on the nutritional value of school meals page:

We are excited about the opportunity to work with parents and the community to promote healthy eating choices for our children.  Please feel free to contact Mrs. Nunn if you have any questions, need additional information, or have ideas to support Whole Grain Heroes.
